We ask Sarea the important stuff
2025, March
1. What’s your favourite Amsterdam neighbourhood to shoot?
Where do I even begin? Amsterdam is such a beautiful city; every street and corner has something worth capturing. Even the more mundane areas are great for challenging myself and pushing creativity. That said, I often find myself drawn to the busier streets like Damrak, Haarlemmerstraat, Spui, and the Central Station area.

2. Which secret spot would you recommend (now not secret anymore)?
The corner of Beurs van Berlage, where Damrak and Oudebrugsteeg intersect, has a staircase and an arch that perfectly frame the iconic buildings along the Damrak canal. I know it’s one of the most or maybe the most photographed spots in Amsterdam, but I personally haven’t seen anyone capture it from this perspective. With its stunning architecture and iconic backdrop, all it takes is waiting for the right subject to create a perfect, all-in-one shot.

3. What’s your most memorable streetphotography experience from the past year?

There's no single moment that stands out, but I love shooting in the rain. I never use an umbrella because feeling the rain helps me connect more deeply with the scene. The atmosphere and emotions on the street in those moments are truly one of a kind.

4. Which type of images are you currently shooting?
Lately, I’ve been drawn to candid, moody, high-contrast, and black and white shots. I used to shoot primarily with an 85mm, but now I’ve been using 24mm more often. It’s definitely a challenge for candid street photography, but I love how it lets me capture the entire scene.

5. Which (street)photographer inspires you?
I'll try to keep it short, though it's tough because so many photographers across different genres inspire me. Some of my favorites include:
Fan Ho, Alan Schaller, Philip Penman, Saul Leiter, Vineet Vohra, Joakim Moller, and Vivian Maier.
