1. What’s your favourite Amsterdam neighbourhood to shoot?
Although I carry my camera everywhere, I keep coming back to the city centre if I want to shoot. Mainly Rokin, Damrak, the Dam, Warmoesstraat, and an occasional excursion to Waterlooplein. It isn’t necessarily the nicest area to shoot in, but I’m quite impatient, and it’s busy, so that gives me the biggest chance of encountering something. However, most often, pictures taken outside of this area look way cooler to me. I should really explore more neighborhoods.
2. Which secret spot would you recommend (now not secret anymore)?
Hmmm, this one is hard. For some reason I always get excited and expect to see something good when walking on the Raadhuisstraat towards the Rozengracht. That’s a cool spot.
3. What’s your most memorable streetphotography experience from the past year?
That would have to be the UvA protests. It was really impressive to see so many people mobilize and watch the city centre become the stage for it.
4. Which type of images are you currently shooting?
I haven’t been taking photos much this past winter. I tried taking some more pictures of stuff other than people, like random objects or my house, but nothing beats a good street photograph.
5. Which (street)photographer inspires you?
Streetwise, my favorites are Jeff Mermelstein, Richard Sandler, Daniel Arnold, Todd Gross, Brian Karlsson, Jeremy Paige, and Alex Webb. I’m also really into the documentary style of photographers like Boogie, Jill Freedman, and Yan Morvan. I also admire the work of photographers in the skate community, like Ben Colen and Ari Marcopoulos. Lastly, if you want to know how to take good pictures of hotel rooms, you should check out Greg Girard.
